Chapter 17

“Rebel!” Jack fell down to his hands and knees and quickly crawled to his unconscious lover, gently placing his hands on either side of Rebel’s head. He saw the blood was dried on the head laceration and Rebel was pale. He took out his phone and dialed 911 as he continued to caress Rebel’s face.

As soon as the operator picked up he said, “This is Sheriff Jack Colton of the San Isabel County Sheriff’s office and I have an unconscious man at 27845 County Road 511. He has a head laceration but no other visible injuries.”

“Thank you sheriff we are dispatching an ambulance from the Apishipa Creek Trauma Clinic. Is the man breathing?”

Of course he was Jack was watching the slow rise and fall of his chest as if it was his own lifeline. “Yes.”

“Good, stay with him and if he stops breathing I will need you to perform CPR, are you current in your Red Cross Certificate?”

“Of course, just tell them to hurry!” He pushed end and let the phone drop before he started caressing his lover’s face with both hands. “Come on Rebel, baby, wake up for me. Rebel please don’t leave me, I can’t take it again.”

Tears rolled out of his eyes like a dam had cracked and he brushed them off his face. How could this happen? Who had hurt his lover?

He looked up and saw where the smell was coming from. The screen of the old television was broken. He saw blood on the edge of the dresser and figured that was where Rebel had gotten the injury from. He leaned down to kiss Rebel quickly and stood to look around a little better, knowing he might find some clue as to who had done this and knew that once the paramedics came in he could likely lose any evidence. Inside of the broken TV was something lodged in with the ancient tubes and cloth covered wires. He moved carefully around Rebel while still watching his chest and unplugged the old set before he stuck his hand inside, navigating the jagged glass, to pull out Rebel’s cell phone.

Suddenly it was clear. No one had done this to Rebel; he’d done it to himself. “Damn it Rebel why didn’t you call me?”

The front of two drawers were broken from being kicked in, a cedar chest was moved from its obvious former place at the end of the bed and pictures were scattered in the corner. He bent down to pick one up and saw a much younger Rebel smiling and holding up a fish while he stood next to San Isabel Reservoir.

When the paramedics arrived they worked fast to secure Rebel to the board and transport him out to the ambulance. Jack watched feeling helpless as the man and woman worked on his lover and he wanted to ask a million questions but as Rebel was being put into the back he started to wake up. Jack jumped in and held Rebel’s hand.

“I’m here baby. I’m right here.
